Instilling Values in the Next Generation

"Working out together has narrowed the generation gap. For the most part, our activities and thoughts are different from our kids. We spend a lot of time telling kids what they should be doing without doing it ourselves. By training together a message is sent that I’m willing to get involved and that there are benefits from a collective effort."

"As we train together, I want her to learn that these are life skills; from teamwork, confidence building, goal setting, achieving results, to hard work and perseverance! I don’t know how far she will go with soccer, but what she is learning about herself will only help her build a strong foundation and a determination to succeed as a young adult. Also, that staying healthy and active are important your whole life through!! I truly believe this is evident in everything we do in our lives. When you are physically healthy you are also emotionally healthy. I am very proud of Chay, and even though she won’t admit it, I think she is very proud of her mom. "

"After our first few classes, you recommended that Chay and I take some personal training sessions to learn the proper form for lifts and kettle bell work. Jennifer Murray was our instructor. An accomplished athlete herself, I couldn’t have asked for a better role model for my daughter and myself. Jen was a wonderful teacher as she took us step-by-step through all the lifts and swings. Chay caught on very quickly and mom needed a little more repetition. Jen praised our work effort, tweaked our form, and made us laugh. It was an awesome experience. "

"Kids have tremendous pressures in our society today: they face challenges and temptations that involve their bodies and minds. It is crucial for parents today to be involved with their children, not only to monitor their friends and whereabouts, but also to monitor their physical and emotional well-being. I am extremely grateful and blessed to be able to spend time with my children in a place that is nurturing to the mind and body-STICKS. I have watched from near and a far as my children have grown stronger and more confident in their physical bodies. I thoroughly enjoy exercising with my children. We are able to step outside of our typical roles and participate as equals as Chris, Keely, and Jen put us through physical and mental challenges. The opportunity that STICKS has given me to be an active participant in my children’s lives, as well as the chance to connect with them on a different level, is priceless. I would encourage any parent to stand side-by-side with his or her child and go through the elite training that is STICKS. It allows you to grow, not only physically stronger together, but mentally stronger as well. I am truly thankful to be able to spend this time at STICKS, building muscle and confidence, as well as strengthening my bond with my children."

I must say I do enjoy coming to Sticks with my kids, and a couple reasons stand out aside from the conditioning.

I get to share, with my kids, the satisfaction of completing another workout. Many conversations ensue on the way home, and I can tell they feel good about their efforts. I’m not sure we would be here if it wasn’t for Kaitlin wanting to improve her performance at the state meet. And her brother and sister see the importance of overall conditioning as it relates to their specific sports. We even talk about our overall diet, but we are still tempted by sweets. Well at least we’re cognizant of eating a proper diet! I’m also fairly confident that none will become smokers. Sometimes kids learn what “not to do” by observing parents and relatives! The training has reinforced the notion of maintaining good health, and it can be achieved at whatever age.

Working out together has narrowed the generation gap. For the most part, our activities and thoughts are different from our kids. We spend a lot of time telling kids what they should be doing without doing it ourselves. By training together a message is sent that I’m willing to get involved and that there are benefits from a collective effort.

Above all, I’m able to share something with my kids that has value, and something we have to work for. That makes it different from the normal family outings. We also get to share in our achievements, knowing that each of us contributed in some way by participating together. Just last night, Kaitlin qualified for the indoor state meet in the 200m. She looked strong, and bettered her time from a year ago.

thanks for running a great outfit,

Rudy

Lisa & Chay

I first heard about Sticks Training from my sister, Chris Brownlee. Her son, Andrew, a competitive hockey player, has been training with Sticks for several months. My sister and I have had many conversations about how to help our young athletes achieve their goals of becoming stronger both physically and mentally. Since Andrew has been training she has seen an improvement in his game.

Physical fitness has always been a part of our family’s every day life and my husband and I have tried to instill this mind set in our children. I thought what a perfect opportunity to try something new and be able to spend some "special" mom time with my daughter. My daughter Chaylynne, 13, is a competitive soccer player and for two years her coach has told her in order to play at the next level she would need to get stronger. So after having talked with my sister, I thought we would give Sticks a try.

After just a few classes, Chay was playing with a new found attitude, her confidence and self esteem was elevated. She felt she could take on anybody that crossed her path. Parents and coaches complimented her on her play. I on the other hand, couldn’t walk for a week :o) I didn’t have the heart to tell her she would need to train for at least 4 - 6 months to really benefit from her strength training, but wanting to support my daughter's new found attitude and be a role model, we forged on!

As we train together, I want her to learn that these are life skills; from teamwork, confidence building, goal setting, achieving results, to hard work and perseverance!

What is also a very positive message for both of us are the women that teach and train at Sticks. Keely and Jen are great role models for women of all ages. They inspire us to live a healthy lifestyle and to make that commitment to taking care of ourselves.

On a side note, I would also like to thank you for supporting Chay in her goals. What a special moment when you announced to the "Sticks family" that she had made the State ODP Team for her age group. That meant a lot to her!

Thank you for your expertise, guidance and the professionalism that you and your staff provide.

What is the W.O.D. Class?

W.O.D. stand for workout of the day.Our W.O.D. Classes are CrossFit based. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program designed for overall fitness. Overall fitness is defined by the 10 recognized fitness domains. These are cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. Our program is by design broad and general. We train people to get stronger, faster, leaner and more flexible.

These one hour long classes are designed with a warm up, skill development, workout of the day and finally lifting/strengthening portion. The exercises, format and design change daily to avoid boredom and complacency. More importantly the variation in the training sessions will constantly stress your body in different ways.

Our program is designed for universal scalability. A fighter or professional athlete can train next to a grandmother, housewife or a salesman. Their needs differ not by kind but by load and intensity. CrossFit is the base strength and conditioning program for many first responders, tactical operations and the military. It is also the strength and conditioning program for many youth athletes, moms/dads and everyday people.

Our workouts are measurable, repeatable and scored. Everyone documents their scores on the whiteboards. This allows people to see their progress in black and white. They can also see their progress in whatever they encounter in everyday life whether it is fighting a fire, playing summer softball or picking up bag of groceries.
