INTENSITY

Imagine doing a few more reps than you thought. Imagine performing an exercise with more weight than you thought you could do. On the other hand imagine not pushing yourself in your workouts. What if you went through a workout that didn't give you any significant physical or mental challenge?

What if someone asked you do something that was physically unachievable? Try performing 300 squats. If you can do this task without any pause or rest then I would like to shake your hand. Most humans will have to break at some point. At what point would you quit? Intensity is pushing that point of breaking. Your body says you can't do more but you push for more. Next workout try ignoring your body, toughing it out and doing a few more. Try taking a :03 second break vs. a :10 second break.

Everyone has a threshold they meet during an intense workout. Many people push that threshold to do more than previously thought. This is where gains are made and confidence is built.

Intensity is "the independent variable most commonly associated with maximizing the rate of return on favorable adaptation." Intensity is the difference.

DEADLIFT-This lift is a phenomenal exercise that strengthen the core, legs, forearms and back. Look to keep the bar over the feet during the exercise. Look for a neutral spine position and the lumbar curve. Consistent back angle while pulling from the ground is to be maintained. When the bar passes the knees the hips open and the knees straighten.
The benefits are not only greater functional strength but also increase bone density and a beneficial neurological response.

Yesterday we had a "Bring A Friend" day. We opened up the 9:30 am and 5:30 pm WOD Classes to new people. The classes were of decent size and everyone helped out during the teaching and instructional phase. One of the impressive aspects of the training is that not only our members get stronger, leaner and healthier but they also get educated. Many of our experienced members pulled new people aside to help and explain. From our perspective at STX, this is very impressive and speaks volumes.

TRAINING WITH BARBELLS:
We train utilizing bodyweight (gymnastic) movements. Air squats, push ups, pull ups, dips, rows, running and many other bodyweight exercises are effective because they are primal movements that we need to do everyday of our lives. In our WOD Classes we use many training modalities. One of them is barbell exercises. Training with barbells gives us the opportunity to create a training situation with additional loads. Olympic lifts and derivative exercises are one of the best ways to increase core strength, strengthen your back and develop power not only from the hips but the entire body. Lifting weights also delivers a neuroendocrine response in our bodies. This response to weight training stimulus is a positive factor and leads to increased health and fitness levels.

Rx
Going prescribed is a measurement for people at our gym. It is a benchmark. Some people use it as a goal to achieve. Regardless, whether people use Rx weights or not it should not be their first priority.

Proper mechanics, appropriate intensity level are stressed prior to going anywhere near prescribed weights. People quickly realize that during Crossfit WODs, relatively light weights used with high intensity can help achieve profound effects.

If proper form is compromised for the sake of increased weight then bad things happen. If people focus on moving correctly and efficiently while gradually increasing weight and intensity then many benefits occur. Increased strength, decrease body fat and improved physical and mental capacities are all side effects.
