Crossfit Brighton 121231

We have had a great year at Crossfit Brighton. We added more classes and more equipment. We have trained more new people and our veteran members have consistently made gains in their general fitness level. We have also been planning for 2013 with more training, special events and seminars. We are very fortunate to be a part of this growing community here in Brighton. The driving force behind what we do is our members. You have continued to work hard, make improvements on form, technique and ability do more work with less rest in a shorter amount of time. I enjoy everything about the gym-the weights, barbells, WODs, camaraderie, realizing the workout is "tougher than it looks on the whiteboard". But the most rewarding part of our community and our gym are the success stories. Some teens have found a new sport. Many adults have not only gained strength but also confidence and ability. Having a brief conversation with a member that has accomplished something they never thought they could do is truly enlightening. Keep up the consistent work and keep pushing the bar.

The Crossfit Secret

My hopefully lifelong journey with crossfit started out 1 year ago. When I entered Crossfit for the first time I was scared, not sure if it was going to work or not. I had been overweight for some time, and I thought that it could never get better. Up to that point I was unsatisfied with the way I looked and felt, and for the most part, had little confidence. The first workout I did was hard, but afterwards I felt I could stick with it for a while.

So for the next month I went every other day, and at the end felt that something had changed. At the end of November of 2011, I weighed myself on the scale, and I had lost 15 pounds. I was very much amazed at how far I had come in such a short time, and decided that, without a doubt, Crossfit was awesome. So I continued and continued, and eventually leveled out at 155. By June, I had lost 50 pounds. The transformation was so profound I can’t even put it into words. I went from overweight to fit and in shape in a relatively short period of time. From then on I focused on gaining physical fitness more than I had at that point, and once again, Crossfit delivered. It helped me gain almost 20 pounds on all of my major lifts, and today I am still building on to this.

I feel Crossfit is different than any other workout program out there. Right now Crossfit feels as if it is part of my lifestyle. It is as normal as going to school, brushing my teeth, etc. Not going to crossfit for a week would be like not eating dinner for a week. It just has to be there to be a normal day. Some call it a cult, and if so, it may be one of the best cults on the face of the planet; a cult I would want to be apart of. Along with a general lifestyle also comes social connections that can be built. The rule at Crossfit Brighton is that if you don’t know some, you better introduce yourself or you’re going to do some burpees (rarely). So, you tend to know everyone there, which in turn leads to a sense of community.

The community at Crossfit is very supportive and always fun to be apart of. Whether it’s everyone always saying good job after a workout or the whole gym bursting out into laughter, there’s never a dull moment at Crossfit. I want to thank crossfit for all it has helped me accomplished. Without it I would be so lost, and most likely where I was a year ago. I just want to say to all those future crossfitters is that it is always worth a shot, no matter how out of shape you are or what physical fitness you have.

I believe that Crossfit is the best physical fitness program out there, by increasing fitness in all areas. I mean sure, you may have bigger biceps by going to a gym, but Crossfit increases your fitness as a whole, making you healthier and livelier. Whether you’re out shape, old, or young, Crossfit is for everyone, and anyone can succeed with it.

Our WOD Classes are one hour long instructor led classes designed to improve people's overall fitness levels.  Our programming changes daily to combat boredom.  Bored? Uninspired? Lack of results?  Schedule an Intro.

Crossfit is a growing community and another step in the evolution of physical fitness.  Many people learn about this type of training by word of mouth or online searches.  The training involves foundational movements combined with intensity and motivation.  For some this conjures up reluctance and hesitation regarding their ability to participate.

"I don't think I can keep up."

"What if I don't know the exercises?"

"I'm not strong enough to do pull ups, how can I do the workouts?"

These are all questions and comments we hear when people come to our gym.

#1 You can keep up!  We modify and scale the workout according to your abilities.

#2 We teach and coach.  We stress learning proper form first before increasing weight or intensity levels.

#3 Worried about not being able to perform certain exercises?  No worries.  We will go over how to perform the exercises as well as how to modify the exercise to make it doable for you.

Basically we have two requirements. The first is to have the self motivation to walk in our doors.  The second is the dedication and willingness to work hard.  Simple enough.  We handle things from there.  We are not a typical gym and our community of hard working crossfitters help create a supportive and motivational group.

Raw Brownie Bars

1 cup Almonds (preferrably almonds that have been soaked in an acidulated medium (i.e. lemon juice) for at least eight hours.)
1 cup dates
5 tablespoons raw cacao (cocoa) powder
4 tablespoons shredded unsweetened coconut
2 tablespoons honey (optional) *I would not recommend honey for people who are trying to lose weight. The bars are sweet enough without it anyways!
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

--Frosting choices below
1. Place almonds alone in your food processor and process until crumbly.
2. Add dates to the almonds and process again until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed.
3. Add the remaining ingredients and process again until the mixture turns dark chocolatey brown. Stop processing before it gets too buttery. (There should still be air between the small bits so that you will be able to press them down into your brownie pan.)
4. Dump the mixture into a loaf pan
5. Store in Refrigerator

Almond Butter Fudge Frosting

3 tablespoons raw cacao (cocoa) powder
2 teaspoons coconut oil
2 teaspoons honey (optional)
3 tablespoons of Almond butter
1 teaspoon of Vanilla extract

1. Stir all ingredients together and spread on top of you Raw Brownie bars.

Chocolate Date Frosting

1 cup dates
1/4 cup raw cacao (cocoa) powder
1/4 cup cold-pressed coconut oil
3/4 cup water
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract or Rum

1. Process all ingredients in a high powered blender. Pour over brownie bars.
**Frosting may be slightly runny but will firm up in the refrigerator.

We hope you enjoy this recipe! It's a great snack for the kid's lunches or for after a workout. If you want additional nutrition information or recipes feel free to send me an email. Aubrey (the brains behind the bar) is an amazing baker and sweet connoissuer. She bakes specialty birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and extravagant desserts of all kinds. If you are interested in placing an  order for healthy, or unhealthy (sometimes you gotta indulge!), sweets and treats you can contact me via email, call my cell (248-877-5437), or talk to me at the gym.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté 2 minutes. Stir in black beans, green chili peppers, and salsa. Simmer a few minutes, until sauce thickens and reduces. Add chicken and bring to temperature. Remove from heat and stir in cilantro. Arrange tortillas on a flat surface. Top each tortilla with an equal amount of chicken mixture. Many people walk in the gym and have interesting reactions. Many are intrigued about the differences in our gym vs. gyms down the street. After their reaction comes many questions. How do I do the exercises? What if I can't keep up? Will someone help me during my workout? Do you have a smoothie bar? (seriously, haven't heard that one yet but I'm sure it will come) Our gym is different and it does take a bit of an explanation. A gentleman came in the other day. He had a different reaction. He just learned about Crossfit and wanted to see a gym for himself. He was an older person, had an accent and trained in a communist country many years ago. As I explained what we did, he explained what he grew up doing for strength and conditioning. Interestingly, he trained like we do. More accurately, we trained like he did many years ago before fancy gyms, mirrors and machines. There are some differences as Crossfit includes a wide range of training modalities such as track, Oly lifts, weightlifting, gymnastics but many of the movements were the same. Crossfit does include a wide range of domains to accomplish the goal of increased fitness levels but squats, deadlifts and pushing weight overhead were great exercises many years ago, are great exercises now and will be in the future.
